Connecting Campus and Community
Lehigh University, founded in 1865 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is a leading research institution renowned for engineering, business, and the arts. Nestled into the side of South Mountain in a city shaped by the legacy of Bethlehem Steel, the campus has seen significant growth in the 21st century. To support a vision of a more dynamic, connected campus community, Exit partnered with Lehigh to design a unified wayfinding infrastructure that brings consistent branding and improved navigation across all three campuses.
Forging Forward
Drawing inspiration from Bethlehem’s steelmaking heritage, the design incorporates the geometry of an I-beam at its core, with subtle rivet details at the base. Bold signage in Lehigh’s signature gold cultivates an authentic and unmistakable sense of place that honors the University’s history while guiding today’s visitors.
Peak Performance
Lehigh’s distinctive topography presents unique wayfinding challenges. Stretching across 600 feet of elevation change, the campus required strategic placement of vehicular signage along optimal roadways to ensure safe and efficient navigation. Pedestrian-scale signs encourage students to explore campus on foot, and accessible pathways are clearly highlighted to support an inclusive, welcoming journey for all.
Clear Routes Ahead
While Lehigh has long operated a shuttle bus network, it had been under-signed and difficult to navigate. Exit designed updated route maps and transit signage to clarify connections, promoting the use of the shuttle system.
