UPMC
UPMC is one of the largest healthcare systems in the country, with more than 1000 facilities, including hospital campuses, outpatient centers, laboratories, and individual physician’s offices. As part of an ongoing partnership, Exit worked closely with UPMC’s in-house branding and signage teams to develop a standardized wayfinding system designed to unify every location in their network and accommodate future growth.
Employing the brand’s signature colors, consistent entrance language, and a clear hierarchy of information, Exit developed signage to communicate the new UPMC brand and essential visitor information at every scale, from the largest hospital campus to the smallest in-home office.
Exit conducted an audit of existing signage at all UPMC locations, focus groups conducted with UPMC executives and staff, and patient questionnaires that revealed the challenges and opportunities at each facility.
Full-size working prototypes helped determine the optimum size, materials, legibility, and location of each new element, and solutions were continuously tested throughout the design process and into the rollout.
“Exit Design has done a great job of guiding us through a challenging and complex process. Their project management, design and programming expertise are helping us achieve our rebranding and wayfinding goals.”

To help streamline design, installation, and upkeep of all wayfinding elements, Exit also created a new UPMC sign catalog, featuring design specifications and installation instructions that will save the healthcare network time and money while maintaining the quality and consistency of their brand.
The catalog will continue to be used as a reference to efficiently update sites using outdated branding, to install consistent wayfinding across new campuses, and to improve the visitor experience at all locations.
