A System Built for Scale

UPMC is one of the largest healthcare systems in the country, encompassing more than 1,000 facilities, including hospital campuses, outpatient centers, laboratories, and physician offices. As part of an ongoing partnership, Exit worked closely with UPMC’s in‑house branding and signage teams to develop a standardized exterior signage system that could unify every location while supporting future growth. Using the brand’s signature colors, consistent entrance language, and a clear hierarchy of information, the system communicates the UPMC brand and essential visitor guidance at every scale, from major medical centers to individual offices.

Research‑Driven from the Start

To ground the system in real‑world needs, Exit conducted a comprehensive audit of existing signage across the system. This research was paired with focus groups involving UPMC executives and staff and patient questionnaires, revealing both global and site specific challenges and opportunities.

Designed, Tested, Refined

Full‑size working prototypes played a critical role throughout the design process. By testing size, materials, legibility, and placement in real environments, the team was able to refine each element before rollout. Solutions were evaluated and adjusted continuously, ensuring the final system performed effectively across a wide range of conditions.

A Clear Language of Arrival

At the core of the exterior system is a new wayfinding language designed to simplify arrival and orientation. Each building entrance is identified with a color‑coded letter, which is paired with corresponding parking areas using the same indicator. This methodology creates a clear, repeatable experience throughout the system.

Standards That Support the Future

To streamline design, installation, and long‑term maintenance, Exit created a comprehensive UPMC sign standards catalog. The catalog outlines design specifications and installation guidelines that save time and resources while maintaining brand quality and consistency. It continues to serve as a vital reference for updating outdated sites, rolling out wayfinding across new campuses, and improving the visitor experience throughout the entire UPMC network.
