Park Proud

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation (PPR), one of the largest urban park and recreation systems in the world, with more than 400 parks, sought a new signage program that would strengthen community pride, build brand awareness, increase park use and accessibility, and elevate the experience for both residents and visitors. Exit partnered with PPR to develop a easily maintained system that communicates clearly, welcomes broadly, and reflects the identity of the city’s treasured public spaces.

Flexibility for a Diverse Network

Given the vast variety and scale of parks—ranging from neighborhood parks to expansive trail parks—the new system needed to adapt seamlessly to each unique setting. Exit designed a versatile kit of parts, enabling components to scale appropriately for different park types and community needs. Each sign type was carefully crafted with a clear purpose and role within the larger family.

Naturally Urban

PPR’s system encompasses everything from dense urban parks to lush natural landscapes like the renowned Fairmount Park. The signage design needed to feel at home in both. A branded wood accent introduces a warm, natural element across all environments, while a patterned back panel helps deter graffiti and supports long‑term maintenance, ensuring the signs remain both durable and inviting.

Designing for Connection and Clarity

Encouraging a sense of public ownership was central to the project. To support multilingual users and ensure clear communication, Exit developed symbol families featuring more than 40 custom icons that highlight available activities and communicate park regulations. Language throughout the program was thoughtfully crafted to deliver regulatory information in a welcoming, user‑friendly voice that strengthens trust and accessibility.

Standards for a Sustainable Future

The new signage program is fully documented in a user‑friendly Signage Standards Manual that outlines specifications for fabrication, installation, and maintenance. Beyond technical guidance, the manual provides planning tools and messaging frameworks to empower PPR staff implement the system consistently across parks over time.
